Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a condition of localised fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. It needs ongoing, informed management — and you are the most important member of the team that manages it.

Lymphoedema arises when the lymphatic system — a network of vessels and nodes that returns fluid from the body's tissues to the bloodstream — is damaged or overloaded. Fluid accumulates, most often in a limb, and the affected tissues carry a higher risk of infection. It commonly follows lymph node removal or radiotherapy, though it can also be present from birth.

How Kylie approaches it

Kylie's lymphoedema work follows the Dr Vodder Method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Combined Decongestive Therapy, in which she holds the highest level of certification and a Certificate of Currency.

Manual lymphatic drainage in lymphoedema management aims to redirect stagnated lymphatic fluid around blocked areas towards healthy, centrally located lymphatic vessels. The pressure used is deliberately light — deeper pressure flattens the small lymph vessels, which defeats the purpose. The movements are slow and rhythmic. Depending on your presentation, sessions may run daily or several times a week for an initial intensive period, then settle into a maintenance rhythm.

What a management program can include

  • Manual lymphatic drainage using the Dr Vodder techniques.
  • Multi-layer lymphoedema bandaging after treatment, or fitting guidance for compression garments where bandaging is not practical.
  • Low level laser applied over the relevant lymph node groups and affected tissue.
  • Mobiderm bandaging, used with the aim of softening fibrotic tissue.
  • Lymphatic taping to support the redirection of fluid between sessions.
  • Pneumatic compression sleeves for the legs or arms where appropriate.
  • Self-massage training — Kylie teaches you (and, where helpful, a partner) light-pressure techniques to use at home, usually twice a day for around twenty minutes.

Kylie reviews progress at every visit — whether the tissues are softening, how measurements are tracking — and adjusts the plan with you. When swelling stabilises, she will advise on being measured for a new compression garment.

When MLD may not be suitable

You may not be able to have manual lymphatic drainage if you have an infection or inflammation in the swollen area, a blood clot, heart problems, or active cancer in the area. If cancer has been in remission for under five years, Kylie will need a doctor's letter granting permission to treat. If you are unsure where you stand, start with a free discovery call.
