Understanding Your Body's Response to Advanced Decongestant & Lymphatic Therapies

Reference Note: “How will I feel days after a treatment using deep oscillation, hivamats, low level laser, Manual Lymphatic Drainage Dr Vodder? Some patients report they are tired, emotional and go to toilet a lot”

Understanding the Treatment Modalities

The combination of specialized physical and decongestant therapies utilized in your session works synergistically to target tissue restriction, inflammation, and stagnant fluid pathways. Each modality contributes uniquely to your physical recovery:

  • Deep Oscillation (Hivamats): Uses electrostatic attraction and friction pulses to gently stimulate deep tissue layers. This promotes fluid movement, reduces localized swelling, and helps soften fibrotic tissue.
  • Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): Utilizes targeted wavelengths of light to modulate cellular activity, decrease tissue inflammation, accelerate cellular repair, and enhance microcirculation.
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD - Dr. Vodder Method): A specialized, rhythmic, light-touch manual technique designed to stretch the skin gently and stimulate lymph vessel contractions, encouraging the clearance of stagnant interstitial fluid and metabolic waste.

What to Expect Days After Treatment

Because these therapies prompt a profound systemic adjustment, mobilizing trapped interstitial fluid and engaging the autonomic nervous system, it is entirely normal to experience several physiological and emotional responses over the following days:

Increased Urination (“Go to toilet a lot”) As Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Hivamats successfully mobilize trapped fluid back into active lymphatic and circulatory pathways, your kidneys process and filter this excess volume. This typically leads to more frequent or heavier urination over the 24 to 48 hours post-treatment as your body efficiently clears the cleared fluid.

Fatigue and Tiredness Comprehensive lymphatic treatments strongly influence the autonomic nervous system, frequently shifting the body out of a sympathetic (“fight-or-flight”) state and deep into parasympathetic (“rest-and-digest”) mode. Additionally, processing and excreting mobilized metabolic waste products requires energy. Mild to moderate tiredness for a day or two is a normal indicator that your body is actively resting and integrating the treatment.

Emotional Release Physical tension, chronic fluid retention, and localized restriction can hold significant stress within body tissues. As deep soft-tissue techniques release these restrictions and re-establish fluid flow, patients frequently report unexpected emotional processing, temporary vulnerability, or a sense of profound emotional lightness afterward.

Recommendations for Optimal Recovery

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support your kidneys in efficiently filtering and excreting the mobilized fluids and waste products.
  • Pace Yourself: Allow yourself adequate rest and avoid heavy physical exertion immediately following your session to give your body time to integrate the physiological changes.
  • Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of how your body responds over subsequent days so you can review your progress and discuss any specific observations with your therapist at your next visit.
